Smart Cards

Ah, smart cards . . . . the darling of all technology writers and a favorite of POS manufacturers, too. Smart cards are booming worldwide, but here in the U.S., we're digging in our heels and refusing to cooperate. However, modernization has a way of creeping up on even the most steadfast traditionalists. It's likely that smart cards will eventually become a significant force in the U.S.

With that in mind, manufacturers are planning ahead with smart-card compliance. O.B. Rawls of Hypercom notes, "Worldwide, 40% of all the terminals we deploy today are smart card enabled." Smart cards are in fact coming, and we might as well plan to capitalize on the benefits they will bring.
